From an Ounce of Prevention to Every Grain to Market

OPI on Sukup Grain Bin

More than 40 years ago, OPI wasn’t founded in a boardroom. It began on a farm.

In the early 1980s, Alberta farmer Dave Crompton and his wife, Jenny, faced the same challenge as countless grain producers: once grain went into the bin, they had very little visibility into what was happening inside. Commercial facilities had temperature monitoring systems, but affordable solutions simply didn’t exist for on-farm storage.

Rather than accept that limitation, Dave built his own.

Using thermocouples, he assembled one of the industry’s first on-farm grain monitoring cables and created a monitor capable of reading it. That simple innovation would become the foundation of OPI and the beginning of an entirely new category of grain management technology.

Today, more than four decades later, that same spirit of innovation continues to drive the company.

An Ounce of Prevention Insurance

The name OPI stands for Ounce of Prevention Insurance, inspired by the timeless saying:

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

According to OPI CEO Adam Weiss, that philosophy has never been more relevant.

“Having an OPI system on your grain bin is insurance that all your hard work will pay off.”

Every growing season represents months of planning, investment, and hard work. Seed, fertilizer, fuel, equipment, labor, and weather all contribute to producing a successful crop. Once grain enters storage, protecting that investment becomes just as important as growing it.

By providing continuous visibility into grain conditions, OPI helps producers identify developing issues before they become expensive problems.

That’s what prevention looks like.

Building an Industry

When OPI introduced its first systems, grain monitoring was still in its infancy.

In the late 1990s, founder Dave Crompton once again helped reshape the industry by pioneering digital grain monitoring cables making installations simpler, data more reliable, and monitoring easier than ever.

As internet connectivity expanded, OPI continued to lead with web-based monitoring, mobile applications, automated fan control, and integrated grain management solutions that gave growers remote access to their bins from virtually anywhere.

Today, grain monitoring has become an expected part of modern grain storage, but Adam is quick to point out that OPI helped create that expectation.

“We basically created an industry.”

Innovation has always been part of OPI’s DNA, and it remains central to the company’s strategy today.

Why Grain Management Matters More Than Ever

Today’s farmers face a very different economic environment than they did even a few years ago. Input costs continue to rise. Margins remain tight. Every bushel carries more value.

“When margins are thin, farmers need affordable technology that helps them squeeze every last dime out of the grain they have stored.”

Spoilage, shrink, overdrying, and quality discounts don’t just reduce grain quality they directly impact profitability.

Grain management provides the visibility needed to protect that value throughout storage, helping operators preserve grain quality until market conditions are right.

Innovation With Accountability

Technology never stands still. Neither does OPI. Over the past several years, the company has completely modernized its product portfolio, introducing new handheld monitoring tools, advanced automation platforms, and patented innovations designed to simplify grain management while providing more actionable data than ever before.

But innovation alone isn’t enough. Reliability matters just as much.

“We can continue to innovate and lead the market,” Adam says. “When there are problems in the field, we stand behind everything we do.”

That commitment extends well beyond product development. Every new product is supported by engineering, manufacturing, customer support, and OPI’s extensive dealer network, ensuring customers have experienced partners from installation through ongoing support.

Every Employee Owns Quality

One of the defining characteristics of OPI’s culture is the belief that quality belongs to everyone. From engineering and manufacturing to customer support and product development, every department contributes to delivering reliable solutions that customers can trust.

In fact, every employee has the authority to stop production if something doesn’t meet OPI’s quality standards. That mindset reflects a simple belief: Protecting customers begins long before a product reaches the field.

Customer feedback also plays a vital role in continuous improvement. Support teams, product managers, and dealers work together to capture real-world experiences and use them to shape future innovations.

Built Around the Customer

A few years ago, OPI reorganized around two priorities:

  • Deliver an exceptional customer experience.
  • Accelerate product innovation.

The company strengthened its customer support organization with technical experts capable of resolving issues remotely or assisting customers in the field when needed.

At the same time, OPI invested heavily in product development, modernizing its grain management portfolio while maintaining compatibility, simplicity, and ease of use.

Those efforts are amplified through a carefully selected dealer network that shares OPI’s commitment to long-term customer success.

The goal isn’t simply to sell equipment. It’s to build lasting partnerships.

Success Looks Like Peace of Mind

When asked what success looks like for an OPI customer, Adam’s answer isn’t centered on technology. It’s centered on confidence. Success means knowing your grain is protected while you’re spending time with your family. It means taking a vacation without worrying about what’s happening inside the bin. It means having confidence that your investment will pay for itself by preserving grain quality and maximizing market value.

Ultimately, grain management provides something every producer values: Peace of mind.

Every Grain to Market

As the world’s population continues to grow beyond eight billion people, the challenge facing agriculture becomes increasingly clear.

We must produce more food using the same, or even fewer, resources.

Yet around the world, enormous amounts of harvested grain never reach consumers. In developed countries, significant quantities of stored grain are still lost before reaching market. In developing regions, post-harvest losses can be dramatically higher.

For OPI, solving that challenge isn’t simply good business. It’s the company’s mission. Every bushel protected represents less waste, better profitability for producers, and more food available for a growing world. That’s why OPI continues to innovate. That’s why it continues to invest in its people, products, and partners. And that’s why, more than 40 years after one Alberta farmer built his first monitoring cable, OPI remains focused on one simple goal: Every Grain to Market.
